Most remarkably, the unprecedented Aboriginal Art public commission at the Mus\u00e9e du quai Branly in Paris contributed to Aboriginal art\u2019s international exposure. artworks\u2019 origins.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>A COMPLEX NETWORK OF ARTIST REPRESENTATIVES AND SELLERS<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Artists,<\/li>\n<li>Official art centres,<\/li>\n<li>Backyard dealers, locals operating other businesses such as car yards or motels,<\/li>\n<li>Private studios belonging to non-Aboriginal people,<\/li>\n<li>Agents and Dealers,<\/li>\n<li>Galleries,<\/li>\n<li>Auction houses,<\/li>\n<li>Online providers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Among these are \u2018carpetbaggers\u2019\u00a0(individuals, agents or dealers directly approaching and taking advantage of artists) whose\u00a0questionable and deceitful trading practices\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>By-passing art centres and cherry-picking artists,<\/li>\n<li>Providing little or inappropriate payment to the artists,<\/li>\n<li>Potentially forcing artists to work under duress,<\/li>\n<li>Selling misleading or fraudulent works,<\/li>\n<li>Finding their way into galleries or on the internet for inflated prices,<\/li>\n<li>Threatening the Aboriginal art sector\u2019s viability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>PRACTICAL ADVICE FOR THE PURCHASE OF ABORIGINAL ARTWORKS<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Increase your understanding:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Multiply your sources of information, privileging\u00a0institutional and official sources,<\/li>\n<li>Train your eye\u00a0and develop personal preferences (through visits to public exhibitions, the reading of books and magazines)<\/li>\n<li>Consult reputable experts, and cross-check their advice,<\/li>\n<li>Be wary of trends and deceitful selling practices accentuating a family name\/kinship connection with a renowned artist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Checks to perform before purchasing an artwork:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The genuine provenance of the artwork: was it sourced from an official community art centre or ethical organisation acting as a community art centre? (Ask for the certificate of authenticity).<\/li>\n<li>Date of artwork creation<\/li>\n<li>Record of ownership (e.g. possible previous sellers, owners, exhibition displays)<\/li>\n<li>Size and quality of the artwork (carry out a visual check looking for any damage)<\/li>\n<li>Artist\u2019s reputation (ask to see the artist\u2019s biography\u00a0and check that the artwork is consistent with the artist\u2019s body of work)<\/li>\n<li>Pricing structure (Artist\/Community art centre\/Seller\u2019s share)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nAssessing the provenance and the authenticity:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Aboriginal art centres are unanimously recognised as the only original provenance allowing for absolute certainty as far as the authenticity, the ethical nature and the quality of an artwork for sale, are concerned.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of\u00a0artists\u00a0who are part of\u00a0an\u00a0art centre\u00a0(or\u00a0belong to an equivalent\u00a0ethical organization, acting as an art\u00a0centre), it is recommended\u00a0to choose\u00a0an artwork\u00a0coming from\u00a0this very\u00a0art centre\u00a0for the reasons explained\u00a0above,\u00a0and also\u00a0to guarantee the right appraisal of the artwork\u2019s value.
