{"id":1674,"date":"2012-07-10T11:05:31","date_gmt":"2012-07-10T01:05:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.idaia.com.au\/en\/?p=1674"},"modified":"2013-04-23T17:29:18","modified_gmt":"2013-04-23T07:29:18","slug":"issue-14-site-and-being-a-symbiotic-relationship-catalyst-for-aboriginal-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.idaia.com.au\/en\/issue-14-site-and-being-a-symbiotic-relationship-catalyst-for-aboriginal-art\/","title":{"rendered":"Essay: symbiotic relationship, catalyst for Aboriginal art"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Site and being: a symbiotic relationship, catalyst for Aboriginal art<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The idea of a collective impetus, of kinship and shared responsibility toward nature is a crucial frame of reference.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore,\u00a0it is important to take note of Aboriginal art\u2019s historicity: beyond its aesthetic effect, painting is also a site for cultural affirmation, a way for artists to embed their works in profound knowledge and thus ensure that the legacy of the past is kept.\u00a0There are certain politics to contend with, not least their custodianship of the land, a right<\/p>\n<p>All this lends Aboriginal Art its continuity and liveliness. It is anything but a fossilized art form: rather, we should look at it as a life force that springs from a collective impulse to tell stories that speak of time and humankind of the past for actual and future generations.<\/p>\n<p>We should therefore acknowledge the interplay between pictorial sight and the artists\u2019 personal sense of \u2018country\u2019. Place is indeed the shared bedrock, the epitome of their work which treads a very fine line between life and art.<\/p>\n<p>Wandjuk Marika\u00a0<sup>1<\/sup>\u00a0clearly states that art and life are not distinct: \u201cart upholds the laws by which we live\u201d, he says, and \u201crelates to the physical world around us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, attachment to the land stimulates the artists\u2019 creative responses. Their work traverses a wide range of media, from painting, to music and dance\u2026 Art making is channeled\u00a0<i>through<\/i>\u00a0nature and in turn imbedded, located\u00a0<i>in<\/i>\u00a0nature: dislocated to a gallery space, these exhibits and so-called \u2018artifacts\u2019 shift identities \u2013from sacred art to secular \u2018artifacts\u2019. The totemic quality is somewhat lost, as it no longer fits with the\u00a0<i>land<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the acrylics at least offer a glimpse of these painted \u2018mind maps\u2019. At the same time, we can recall their original setting lest we forget the intrinsic depth of meaning. Site is the node and vehicle for appreciation.
